A popular misconception is that Greek women's organizations are called sororities. Sorority is latin and has no Greek meaning. Fraternity, on the other hand, means either brother or sister.
Also, because Alpha Gamma Delta is a member of the National Panhellenic Conference and "Panhellenic" means "all Greek" and therefore we must be a Greek organization.
Another reason why we are not a sorority is because when Alpha Gamma Delta was founded, it was incorporated in the State of New York as "Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity".
We don't sit around knitting and drinking tea all day long, we do go out and have fun, going dancing, having parties, etc... But, Alpha Gamma Delta stands for more than that. And what it stands for comes first.
Alpha Gamma Delta believes in education and scholarship, philanthropy, and ritual. We have standards that we tyr to uphold both individually and as a group. We try to help support our sisters through anything and we want to do our best.
To help, there are study hall sessions where sisters get together on a regular basis and study together. We provide tutors if they are needed and we have incentives to help the sisters keep up with their work. School takes priority and we make sure to schedule things accordingly.
There is also a program called Rosevines. This program help sisters after they have graduated. It links together all the Alpha Gamma Delta alumni and they can give recently graduated sisters career advice, and maybe even help them get a job.
This is just one of the benefits of being an Alpha Gam.
Alpha Gamma Delta is like a
business. It takes the contribution of all the sisters to make it successful
and it takes coordination to make everything run smoothly. Like any other
company or organization, Alpha Gamma Delta has a council of executive members
and teams that work together to fit each part of Alpha Gamma Delta together.
Every second week there are business meetings where all the sisters meet
to discuss issues that have come up regarding campus, the fraternity itself
and other things going on in the community.
Every sister is eligible to hold an office. These positions have alumna advisors who can help you along every step of the way. By holding one of these positions, you learn many aspects of business such as organizing presentations and actually doing the presentations, delegating tasks to members of your team, writing reports and many other responsibilities.
This is the leadership side of Alpha Gamma Delta. It provides invaluable skills for future careers, no matter what you plan to do.
The words of this song were written by one of our sisters but I don't know who. We sang it at IRD in 1996 and everyone loved it. I think it epitomizes the good times that Alpha Gamma Delta women experience.
(to the tune of the ever-popular
Coca-Cola commercial song)
Whenever there is fun,
Alpha Gam is there. Whenever we walk by, People stop and stare. Whenever there's a party, We're sure to be seen. Whenever there is fun there's always Alpha Gamma! |
Our smiles will always shine,
Our girls will always sing. As long as we've been here, We've always been the best thing. Alpha Gamma Delta, always the one. Whenever there is fun, there's always Alpha Gamma! |
Doo doo doo doodoo doo doo doodoo
Doo doo doo doodoo, always Alpha Gamma! |
